| Activities on the day | KuzeyDoga (www.kuzeydoga.org) has been celebrating the International Vulture Awareness Day in Turkey since its inception with events and a press release. This year we will be celebrating it at Turkey's first vulture restaurant with the news of Turkey's first satellite-tagged Egyptian vultures. In August, after months of effort, we succeeded in catching and fitting satellite transmitters on 3 Egyptian vultures, for the first time in Turkey. We will announce this on the International Vulture Awareness Day at Turkey's first vulture restaurant. We will talk about the migrations and the risks faced by this globally Endangered species that has shown the fastest global decline of any bird species living in Turkey. You can read about Turkey's first vulture restaurant here: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2010/02/16/turkey_vulture_restaurant/ http://news.discovery.com/earth/vultures-dine-at-turkish-carrion-restaurant.html The celebrations will take place in the Igdir province of Turkey where Turkey's all four vulture species occur. These are the globally Endangered Egyptian vultures, globally Near Threatened cinereous vultures, griffon vultures and the lammergeier (bearded vulture). All four species breed in the region, with Egyptian vultures breeding in the Aras and Arpacay canyons nearby that have no conservation status. |
